Kids Will Have Sweet Dreams with Brobo

Posted on June 13, 2013

MommyKatAndKids.com reviews Brobo and Mumu:

"Zackary and Benjamin both fell in love with their new friends the very first night. Zackary has trouble falling asleep right away and so lately he’s been staying up and looking at books until the waning light outside makes it too hard to see. He was so excited to use Mumu to read books a little later at night and I appreciated that he could entertain himself without straining his eyes in the dim light or having the large overhead light keeping him up."

The Story of The Giant TREX Wedding Gift

Posted on June 06, 2013

My very good friends Chung and Lucy just got married!

They are my close brother and sister in Christ and maybe the coolest cats I know. See their sweet wedding and engagement pics for proof.

They have always been awesome supporters of Brobo and graciously came to help us big time at the Chicago Toy & Game Fair. There was even a time when they had requested their very own Giant Trex, similar to our 6-foot Giant Brobo from Chitag.

To be honest, I was too busy and likely too lazy to order a custom giant TREX, so that idea faded... UNTIL my friends from church said they wanted to give Chung and Lucy a unique wedding gift in the form of a huge orange dino from the future. We had our plush people make it and ship to us empty, and we bought 70 lbs of polyester stuffing and stuffed and sewed for 4 hours. See the gift unfold...

1. Our plush designers make an adorable giant 6-foot TREX (5-feet tall while seated) and send me pics for approval. We ship the dinosaur to us without stuffing.

2. We sneak into Chung & Lucy's apartment while they are on their honeymoon, buy 70 lbs of polyester stuffing, and spend a long night of forcefully fitting it into poor Trex while studying Roman 14 and eating all the chocolate I can find.

3. Carol sews up the hole while the rest of us hug Trex to close up the opening. Go team! Let's hope it all holds together in the long run ;)

4. And here is the final result of a late night team effort. I think we put too much in his head, because Trex can't seem to sit up on his own.

5. After they get back from Hawaii, Chung and Lucy find a silly lovable TREX surprise in their living room.

Giant Trex is finally home. Thanks to everyone involved and congrats to Chung and Lucy! You crazy lovebirds!

Making Toys: Part 6 - Brobo B-Sides

Posted on May 26, 2013

And what is going on here?

A robot shark and cactus? And what is up with Pep and Dog?? Wild memories ;) We were also working on an evil Brobo, a ninja, and a robo-cupcake. Maybe one day you'll be hugging a robot dessert with our name on it!

And as promised, here is a rare look at a weird vinyl-faced Brobo sample. Wow. What were we thinking!!??

We even had 3 different sizes we were toying with.

Getting to the right Brobo took alot of revisions and we really learned that making plush is definitely more art than science.

We figured it out eventually!

Making Toys: Part 4 - Plush Designs

Posted on May 21, 2013
It makes us smile each time we look back at older versions of Brobo plushies. There are some very interesting early prototypes that we made in Toronto, Vancouver, and LA. We were so lucky to have eventually discovered our new plush design team while I was in Hong Kong at a tradeshow.

The new plush team was incredible and they really understood what we wanted Brobo to look and feel like. We have heard many disaster stories, and we've experienced a few ourselves, but our team in Shenzhen was pretty awesome. Our company was very blessed to have found a team that was so quick, receptive, efficient, and affordable.

The Brobo Night-Light Plush is born!

10 Baby Products You Can't Live Without

Posted on May 16, 2013

SheKnows.com names Brobo as one of 10 Baby Products You Can't Live Without:

"NEW-MOM MUST-HAVES: Make your life easier, or at least survivable, with our top baby gear picks for the first year of your infant's life. Your mommy brain, and your wallet in some cases, will thank us."

"Remember that bit about 3 a.m. diarrhea clean-up? You'll definitely need a night-light in your baby's nursery. The Brobo plush night-light is a very cool update to a traditional night-light because you can turn it on for five minutes while changing a diaper, and it will also grow into a toy when your child feels afraid of the dark as a toddler." -SheKnows.com

Dog loves Yshia. Yshia loves Dog.

Posted on April 02, 2013
"I wanted you to know that Dog is part of my daughter's bedtime routine nightly. She weaned from nursing about a month ago and Dog was essential for a smooth transition. We snuggle in bed for story time with Dog providing our reading light. It's great how she can turn on our reading light while I flip off the room light and I love that Dog's light turns off automatically. Sometimes we go through '3 cycles' or so but she never protests when it's time for lights out." - N. Valentine

WTS Toy Review: 5/5 STARS!

Posted on April 01, 2013

WTS Toy Review has awarded BROBO® with its highest rating – 5-Star Certified – for Ease of Use, Durability, Visual Appeal, Functionality, Cost Efficiency, and Originality.

http://www.wtstoyreview.com/reviews/2013/04/01/brobo-light-up-plush-kids-toy-review/

Individual Category Rankings

Ease of Use: 5/5
Well, for starters, Brobos couldn’t be any easier to use – and your kids will love learning how! Simply touch the Brobo’s hand to their chest and Brobo vibrates and the light goes on. Touch the hand to the chest again, and Brobo vibrates, dims his light and goes into sleep mode with a 5 minute timer before turning off. Touch the hand to the chest a final time and the light goes off. Easy – fun – and cool!

Durability: 5/5
No durability issues here. We passed our Brobos on to little ones with messy hands and they used, lit, turned off, and generally put their Brobos through the paces – and no worries. Batteries are replaceable, and stains are easy enough to spot clean.

Visual Appeal: 5/5
We were sent in the Brobo named Shine Force to review – and our boys and girls alike loved him! Take a look at www.brobo.com and you’ll see a nice variety of Brobos – including a dog, a Mummy, a girl and a dinosaur. There’s a Brobo perfect for every child!

Functionality: 4/5
This was funny – because at first glance – our kids were in love. After they spent some time playing with their Brobos – they wanted more! More lights, more vibration – and more sounds! Not saying we weren’t satisfied with functionality – but our kids wanted even more.

Cost Efficiency: 4/5
With a price tag of just under $30, Brobos are a bit on the expensive side for a plushie. Yes, there are plushies out there that are much more affordable, but considering the light-up nature – we understand where the extra dollars are.

Originality: 5/5
Before people go up in arms saying that Pillow Pets are already out there and that this isn’t original…we say slow your roll. Brobos are unique, fun, funky characters – and have a big edge over Pillow Pets in that department. Add in their multi-function light/sleep timer – and we are happy to call this original.

OVERALL - 5/5 Stars

Our kids loved, loved, loved playing with their Brobos. They are a fun, bright, cool take on traditional stuffed animals that kids from today are happy to incorporate into their loving, pretend play. Brobos are easy to use and definitely durable. The plushies themselves are all original, and the pricing isn’t too far off of what we are comfortable spending. If you have a little one that loves stuffed animals, love cuddling, and love playing pretend – Brobos are the perfect addition to their collection!

Making Toys: Part 3 - Digital Art

Posted on February 23, 2013

One day I may be brave enough to share the very early ghetto art and toy prototypes from 2010. But for now, I'd like to pretend they don't exist. We're sealing them in the Keji vault!

Check out Brobo before I arrived to Hong Kong in July 2011!

When we were in Asia, Brobo and his pals continued to evolve. Trex was originally green! But Kim really wanted him orange. An orange dinosaur? I had a hard time imagining an Orange Trex, but I'm glad she insisted :)

Green Trex?!

Another Toy Review for PEP

Posted on February 20, 2013

More love from Way2GoodLife.com for our most popular pink night-light plushie:

"It does seem all well worth it when a little girl giggles hugging a pink plush toy, 'Mommy! This is the best present EVER! It’s PEP – I love her so much!' Since she is going through the “Monster under the bed” stage, it definitely helps to have shining force by your side. I am just happy to get her the best gift ever."

TOMOPOP features BROBO!

Posted on February 06, 2013

TOMOPOP wrote up a little article on us. Check it out!

BROBO: the shining plush to cheer up the kiddies! - I wish these were around when I was little!

"Let me start by saying, I had a Gloworm when I was a kid, for anyone who actually remembers them, and I was terrified of it. I wish BROBO was around when I was younger so that I could have had an adorable plush friend to light up the scary nighttime. I think the Dog has to be my very favorite. It's so adorable and I love those eyes it has with that stuck out little tongue. It almost reminds me of our faithful Tomopup!" - Rio McCarthy

Making Toys: Part 2 - Sketch Pad

Posted on January 29, 2013

The current Brobo characters really started to take shape when I was home with my family in Oakville, summer 2011. Here are the Brobo concepts from my sketch pad at that time. Do you recognize Trex and Dog? LOL

Here are some of the earliest drawings of the whole gang.

"Pillow Plush with Electronics?" - Wow... that's an interesting idea. And do you see Mumu

Before making new plush samples, I really wanted to simplify the characters. Most of our toys got direction from this character sheet below. Ahh, the memories...

I guess only Pep kept her name. Kim's idea. Nice one Kim!
